There are three areas in and around Las Vegas: downtown, the strip, and off strip. The downtown is the older area and has the Fremont lightshow. The strip is what most people think of when they think of Las Vegas - it has the major casinos such as the Wynn, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay and much more. You will need a car to go to the off strip casinos. Some of the off strip casinos are excellent such as the Green Valley Ranch and the new M casino.
From the airport to the "strip" is $6 per person for a shuttle or about $15 for up to 4 people by cab. Sign up for players cards at each casino. You can earn clothes, free buffets, or free rooms depending on how much you gamble. Good luck.
Once on the strip, you can get around using the bus which is called the Duece. It is $3 per ride, $7 for 24 hour pass, or $15 for a 3 day pass. You can also buy coupon books that have buy one get one free buffets. There are also free coupon books which you can usually find at the hotels.
